Glaucoma Screening

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Glaucoma. But if diagnosed early and managed properly, the disease progression can be slowed down drastically and blindness can be prevented. That is the reason glaucoma screening is important- to diagnose the disease early.

Who should get a Glaucoma screening done?

Ideally, everyone over 40 years of age needs to get a routine examination done annually or biannually when Glaucoma is detected by chance. Glaucoma screening is more important if you have certain risk factors like

  • Age over 60 years
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Systemic diseases like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Heart Disease, Sickle cell disease
  • Long term use of any form of corticosteroids
  • Previous history of eye trauma or surgery
  • High power glass prescription
  • Thin corneas

How often do you need to get the screening done?*

If you have risk factors for glaucoma

  • Under 40 years  –           Every 2–5 years
  • Age 40–54 years  –         Every 1–3 years
  • Age 55–64 years   –        Every 1–2 years
  • Age 65 years or older  – Every 1–2 years
