Basic structure of the eye

The parts of the eye that you can see are

  • Upper eyelid and eyelashes
  • Lower eyelid and eyelashes
  • Conjunctiva
  • Cornea
  • Pupil
  • Iris

When a line is drawn along the center of the eye and a plane is passed through it and the plane is visualized, we see all the structures that are present along that plane.

The structures from the front to back are

  1. Cornea
  2. Aqueous humour
  3. Iris
  4. Pupil
  5. Lens
  6. Vitreous
  7. Retinal blood vessels
  8. Retina
  9. Optic nerve

Fluid inside the eye

There are two types of fluid inside the eye

  1. Aqueous humour – In the front part of the eye which is continuously produced and drained from the eye.
  2. Vitreous humour – In the back of the eye. It has the consistency of a gel.

Segments of the eye

There are 2 segments of the eye

  1. Anterior (front) segment- Cornea to the lens – consists of anterior and posterior chambers- filled with aqueous humour
  2. Posterior (back) segment- Back of the lens to retina- filled with vitreous humour

Chambers of the eye

There are 2 chambers inside the eye

  1. Anterior (front) chamber – The space between the cornea and the iris.
  2. Posterior (back) chamber- The space between the back of the iris and the lens.
