Layers of retina

The retina is made up of 10 layers where different types of nerve cells connect with each other and finally exit the eye through the optic nerve.

Follow the link to know about the nerve cell

The important nerve cell related to glaucoma, is the ganglion cell. Glaucoma occurs due to the death of these ganglion cells.

Nerve fibre layer in the retina

The ends of the ganglion nerve cells form the nerve fibre layer in the retina which join at the optic nerve head and exit the eye through the optic nerve.

Visual field defects in glaucoma

The visual field defects in glaucoma usually correlate with the nerve fibre layer defects. Nerve fibre layer defects happen as a result of ganglion cell death which leads to glaucoma.
