Contact lens are generally used for cosmetic purposes, to replace spectacles in correcting the refractive power and for therapeutic purposes. They are a safe option if used correctly, cleaned, disinfected and stored.
If not properly used, can lead to blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, conjunctivitis, and also sight-threatening microbial corneal ulcer and endophthalmitis (Juhong et al., 2022).
Examples of MISUSE of contact lens
- Failing to wash hands before placing and removing the lens from the eye.
- Wearing lenses beyond the recommended time
- Not replacing the solution in the lens case after each use. (Better to use the solution advised by the manufacturer)
- Using tap water for cleaning and storing
- Sleeping in unapproved lenses (overnight wear increases the risk of microbial ulcer)
- Failing to replace the lens case regularly
- Not following the manufacturer’s recommendation for disinfection.
- Wearing the lens even if eyes are uncomfortable, red and painful
- Using lens while swimming

- Annual eye check ups
- Follow the manufacturer’s and the doctor’s recommendation in using and caring for the lens.
- Have a pair of spectacles with you at all times in case you have to remove the contact lens due to pain or discomfort.
