Safe use of contact lens

Contact lens are generally used for cosmetic purposes, to replace spectacles in correcting the refractive power and for therapeutic purposes. They are a safe option if used correctly, cleaned, disinfected and stored.

If not properly used, can lead to blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, conjunctivitis, and also sight-threatening microbial corneal ulcer and endophthalmitis (Juhong et al., 2022).

Examples of MISUSE of contact lens

  • Failing to wash hands before placing and removing the lens from the eye.
  • Wearing lenses beyond the recommended time
  • Not replacing the solution in the lens case after each use. (Better to use the solution advised by the manufacturer)
  • Using tap water for cleaning and storing
  • Sleeping in unapproved lenses (overnight wear increases the risk of microbial ulcer)
  • Failing to replace the lens case regularly
  • Not following the manufacturer’s recommendation for disinfection.
  • Wearing the lens even if eyes are uncomfortable, red and painful
  • Using lens while swimming

Good steps

  • Annual eye check ups
  • Follow the manufacturer’s and the doctor’s recommendation in using and caring for the lens.
  • Have a pair of spectacles with you at all times in case you have to remove the contact lens due to pain or discomfort.
